What Are the Ten Qirat of the Quran?

The ten qirat are the ten authentic and recognized methods of reciting the Holy Quran. Each qira’ah traces its roots back to a distinguished Islamic scholar and carries a verified chain of narration going all the way back to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). These are not simply different voices or personal styles. They involve precise differences in pronunciation, makhraj (articulation points), harakat, and in some cases the letters themselves. Students who want to learn ten qirat online can study these variations in detail, while the meaning of the Quran remains completely preserved and unchanged across all of them

The ten recognized qirat are:

Nafi al Madani, Ibn Kathir al Makki, Abu Amr al Basri, Ibn Amir al Shami, Asim al Kufi, Hamzah al Kufi, Al Kisa’i, Abu Jafar al Madani, Yaqub al Basri, and Khalaf al Ashir.

Each of these has its own riwayat, which are the transmission lines through which the qira’ah was passed down across generations. The most widely recited of these in the Muslim world today is Hafs an Asim, followed by Warsh an Nafi and Qalun an Nafi. Studying all ten gives a student a profound and complete understanding of the Quranic sciences.

At Quran Academy USA, we teach all ten of these recitation styles under ijazah-certified scholars who carry this living tradition directly to your screen.

All Ten Recognized Qirat Taught by Certified Scholars

At Quran Academy USA, we offer dedicated instruction in all ten authentic modes of Quranic recitation. Each qira’ah is taught by an ijazah certified scholar with a verified chain of narration. Below is an overview of every recitation school covered in our program.

Hafs an Asim

The most widely recited qira’ah in the world and the one most Muslims already know from daily prayer. Our course covers its complete tajweed rules, usul, and farsh with full scholarly precision.

Warsh an Nafi

Predominantly recited across North and West Africa, Warsh carries distinct rules around madd, hamzah, and letter articulation. Learning it opens an entirely new dimension of Quranic recitation for most students.

Qalun an Nafi

The second riwayah of Imam Nafi al Madani, widely recited in Libya and parts of Tunisia. It shares the same imam as Warsh but carries its own independent pronunciation rules and recitation characteristics.

Ibn Kathir al Makki

Rooted in the recitation heritage of Makkah and transmitted through Al Bazzi and Qunbul. This qira’ah holds deep historical significance and connects students to the earliest generations of Quranic scholarship.

Abu Amr al Basri

Transmitted through Ad Duri and As Susi, this qira’ah is known for its distinct idgham rules and vowel reductions. Studying it gives students a noticeably broader grasp of Quranic phonetics.

Ibn Amir al Shami

The recitation tradition of Greater Syria, transmitted through Hisham and Ibn Dhakwan. It is one of the oldest documented schools of Quranic recitation and carries a rich and respected scholarly heritage.

Hamzah al Kufi

Known for its detailed and precise rules around hamzah pronunciation and madd. A strong tajweed foundation is recommended before taking on this qira’ah, and our scholars guide every student through it with patience.

Al Kisa'i

Transmitted through Al Layth and Ad Duri, this qira’ah is distinguished by its rules around imala and specific letter treatments. Al Kisa’i was among the most celebrated recitation scholars of the early Islamic period.

Abu Jafar al Madani

One of the three imams completing the ten qirat beyond the seven, transmitted through Ibn Wardan and Ibn Jammaz. A rewarding qira’ah for students pursuing advanced Quranic sciences.

Yaqub al Basri

Transmitted through Ruways and Rawh, this qira’ah is known for its unique approach to waqf, ibtida, and letter articulation. A deeply rewarding mode of recitation for dedicated students.

Khalaf al Ashir

The final of the ten qirat, transmitted through Ishaq and Idris. Completing this qira’ah alongside the others gives students a truly comprehensive command of the entire Quranic recitation tradition.

Voices from the Quran Academy USA Community

I had been reciting Hafs an Asim my whole life and never thought I would be able to learn another qira'ah. After just a few months with Quran Academy USA, I completed my first full reading in Warsh an Nafi. My teacher was patient, knowledgeable, and incredibly precise with every correction. I cannot recommend this program enough.

I enrolled to prepare for my ijazah in Qalun an Nafi and the experience exceeded every expectation. The teacher assigned to me had a verified chain going back through Al-Azhar scholars and his command of the usul and farsh rules was extraordinary. Quran Academy USA is the real deal for anyone serious about this science.

As a Quran teacher myself I needed to strengthen my credentials in the ten qirat before I could teach them to my own students. The one on one sessions at Quran Academy USA gave me exactly the structured and authentic instruction I was looking for. My recitation improved in ways I did not expect even after years of teaching.

I tried a few other online Qirat classes before finding Quran Academy USA and the difference in quality was immediately clear. The teacher did not just correct my mistakes, he explained the exact rule behind every correction. That depth of teaching is what this science requires and what this academy consistently delivers.

I started learning Ibn Kathir al Makki with no prior knowledge of any qira'ah beyond Hafs. Within six months I had a solid grasp of its usul and was well into the farsh. The flexibility of scheduling made it possible for me to stay consistent even with a full time job and two kids at home.

What stood out most to me was how seriously Quran Academy USA takes the chain of narration. My teacher explained his own ijazah chain in the first class and that level of transparency built my trust immediately. This is exactly how this sacred science should be taught.
